How to Measure for Inside Mount Window Shades
Get a measuring tape, a piece of paper, and a pencil (or pen) to write down your measurements. If necessary, get a ladder or step stool.
Also, measure in inches, measure every window, and measure the width first and length second.
Now, follow these steps:
For Width
Measure from the left side to the right side of the window. Record your measurement in the top, bottom, and middle.
If the measurements are not the same, use the smallest size or round down to the nearest ⅛” measurement.
For Height
Measure from the top of the window to the window sill. If the window does not have a sill, measure to the point you want the shades to reach.
Record your measurement in three places: left, middle, and right. If the dimensions are not equal, use the lengthiest of the three.
For Depth
Measure the depth of the flat surface of the upper casing. It should be, at minimum, three inches deep.

How to Measure for Outside Mount Window Shades
To measure for outside mount shades instead, measure for:
Width
Measure the area you want the shade to cover. To guarantee complete privacy, make sure the measurement is at least 3 inches past either side of the window.

Height
